Gisèle Nabintu Muyoboke is a small business owner from the Democratic Republic of Congo, running a restaurant on the outskirts of Goma.

Gisèle was first drawn to Bboxx’s solar home system due to the reliability of the electricity provided and its ‘pay as you go’ payment method, making energy access more accessible and affordable. She was among the first to benefit from Bboxx Cook, Bboxx’s initiative to bring clean cooking to both urban and rural areas through LPG and biogas solutions which have been piloted in Rwanda and DRC to date.

Prior to becoming a Bboxx customer, Gisèle faced a lot of difficulties when it came to accessing power, hindering her business’ growth, and impinging on her health. Without reliable electricity, torches, candles, kerosene lamps, and other expensive and detrimental solutions had to be found. The vast majority of Sub-Saharan Africa (86%) live without clean fuels and technologies for lighting and cooking, while four million deaths are caused each year due to indoor air pollution from cooking with inefficient, polluting and harmful fuels.

Bboxx’s mission is to transform lives and unlock potential by enabling wider access to electricity and clean cooking through pay-as-you-go technology using mobile money, removing the usual unaffordable upfront costs– a major barrier preventing the economic development for off-grid communities. Clean energy provision brings people into the digital economy and is fundamental to helping to move the dial on several of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
