Government of Rwanda Partners with Bboxx to Deliver 50,000 Clean Cooking Kits in Landmark National Program

Kigali, 5 November 2025 The Government of Rwanda has partnered with Bboxx, a data-driven super platform transforming lives across Africa, to deliver 50,000 affordable liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cooking kits to low-income households across five districts over the next 18 months.

The programme, implemented in collaboration with Forward7, an initiative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, marks a major step in Rwanda’s clean cooking drive and builds on Bboxx’s long-standing partnership with the Government of Rwanda to expand access to clean, reliable energy.

Anthony Osijo, Group CEO of Bboxx, said:

“We are proud to deepen our partnership with the Government of Rwanda through this landmark initiative. It demonstrates how governments and innovators can work together to deliver affordable, scalable solutions that improve lives and protect the environment.”

Biomass remains Rwanda’s dominant cooking fuel, contributing to deforestation, indoor air pollution, and significant adverse health effects for women and children. The new initiative aims to accelerate the transition away from firewood and charcoal, supporting Rwanda’s energy and climate goals.

Each household will receive a complete LPG kit: a two-burner stove, 12-kg gas cylinder, and smart Cylinder Locking Valve (CLV) with pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) functionality. This digital payment model has already helped Bboxx customers more than double their average monthly LPG consumption by making payments flexible and predictable.

“Clean cooking is about more than technology,” Osijo added. “It’s about health, opportunity, and sustainability for millions of families. This partnership reflects Rwanda’s leadership in clean energy and our shared vision for an inclusive, sustainable future.”

To date, over 7,000 kits have been deployed across Kigali, Rwamagana, and Musanze, benefiting more than 35,000 people. This shift is expected to save around 35,000 mature trees each year from deforestation and avoid thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions.

Bboxx plans to expand distribution to 10,000 households by the end of 2025 and reach the full 50,000 target by late 2026, supported by its existing logistics, digital infrastructure, and community networks.
